Training for Providers

Participate in Our Learning Collaborative

Free trainings are held throughout the year. CMHSPs do not incur direct costs but are responsible for indirect costs such as travel expenses of staff.

Qualifications

To qualify for this free training in our evidence-based Motivational Interviewing learning collaborative, you must be:

  • a Bachelor’s or Master’s level Child Mental Health Professional
  • home based, outpatient, wrap around clinician or intake/access staff
  • employed by or contracted through a Michigan county community mental health authority

Frequency

We regularly make trainings available for clinicians and their supervisors to become skilled in Motivational Interviewing.

Registration

Registration for training is submitted by agency/CMH implementation coordinators for an agency team that is composed of a clinical supervisor and clinicians. Individual clinicians interested in participation in a MI-A learning collaborative should discuss their participation with their clinical supervisor who will discuss agency participation with their implementation coordinator. Please see our upcoming events for dates or contact us for more information.

What is a learning collaborative?

A learning collaborative is a method in which teams of peers come together to study and apply quality improvement methodology to a focused topic area. For MDHHS, it’s working on the fidelity of a specific evidence-based or evidence-informed practice, focusing on best practices for that model, and following fidelity during implementation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does MDHHS support learning collaboratives?

It is a method to integrate learning and practice in a structured and guided way to enhance skill acquisition. Implementation science leads us to know that training alone does not promote adoption of new skills and practices.

What does a learning collaborative include?

It may include some or all of these components.

  • Pre-requisite learning (maybe in-person or virtual).
  • Structured learning sessions or trainings.
  • Consistent scheduled consultation calls with the model’s consultants (experts in the MI-A model).
  • Acquisition and submission of data (from clients, caregivers, and clinicians) related to the implementation of the model.
  • Submission of an example of your work via video or audio recordings.
  • Completion of the model with a determined number of clients/families.
  • Clinical supervision via model specific supervisor within the agency on and about implementation of the EBP conducted in a minimum of biweekly group or individual sessions.

How much time do I have to complete the learning collaborative?

Each Learning Collaborative has a set timeline and timeframe for completion. It ranges from 6 to 18 months.

Can I participate in more than one learning collaborative at a time?

Typically, no, you cannot.

Can I start a new learning collaborative right after finishing another one?

While you can logistically, we highly suggest that you wait a minimum of 6 to 12 months to start a new one. That allows you time to practice the model you have just learned and solidify those skills within your clinical repertoire.

What is the composition of the team that participates in the learning collaborative?

The complete team is comprised of 1 implementation coordinator, 1 EBP specific clinical supervisor, 2 – 8 clinicians (depending on the EBP). A minimum team size is usually 3 individuals.
